| | | | | | | Rome has always been a city with an enormous influence and importance on western civilization. It is not the most ancient modern city, yet it is the one that has preserved the ancient traces of different civilizations, being rich in architecture, art, religion, etc. Rome’s population and its fortune have varied continuously: from being the great metropolis of one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world, turning to an overgrown village during the Middle Ages, to becoming the centre of art and religion under the various Popes of the Renaissance. Although tied to Neapolitan interests and past tradition, Lazio islands with their steep cliff are a natural outlet to Rome's yachting trade.
The Pontine Islands A stunning volcanic archipelago just off the coast of Lazio, the Pontine islands offer turquoise waters, tiny vineyards, wild herbs and flowers. In the summer it can be pretty crowded with Italians flocking in from Rome. Ponza is the most interesting island. It's full of grottoes and secluded beaches. The Pilatus Caves are one of the main higlights. Ventotene is smaller and more tranquil. For most of its history it was a prison and there's not a lot to see and do now. There are remains of a Roman villa - but they're not exactly spectacular. The beaches are fines but the tranquility of the island is probably the main draw.
Marina & starting point : Marina Porto di Roma in Ostia. In romans times Ostia was Rome's main commercial and military port defending the coastline and the mouth of the Tiber. Now Ostia is a brand new marina with supermarket, restaurant, bar, toilets, showers, police, custom, weather forecast, free car park and a bank with exchange services. Visiting Ostia is like visiting Tivoli and Hadrian's villa: a relaxing trip. Reserve a whole day for your visit - not just to relax, but also because Ostia deserves it. The base is distant from downtown Rome 45 minutes by car. The Rome Fiumicino airport is distant 10 minutes by car.
Marina di Nettuno. Easily reachable from Rome within one hour either by train or by car, extremely beautiful and surrounded by the ancient and impressive Medieval Village, this is the Marina di Nettuno. The Marina di Nettuno is a brand new harbour, the biggest one in Italy with 800 berths. All the useful services are available : supermarket, restaurant, bar, toilets, showers, police, custom, weather forecast and a bank with exchange services.
